He apologized for ghosting me: what to say back and how to tell if he means it
"I'm really sorry for disappearing. That wasn't fair to you." It arrived after a month of silence, and part of you wants to accept it on the spot while another part wants to screenshot it for the group chat.
A real apology and an easy one
An apology can be the start of something better or the quickest way back in. The wording usually tells you which.
A real apology is specific. It names what he did ("I stopped answering when things got serious"), doesn't lean on excuses, and doesn't ask you to make him feel better. It often comes with an offer to talk properly, and he's fine if you need time.
An easy apology is short and general: "sorry I was MIA, life got crazy." It's followed straight away by "anyway, how are you?" The aim is to get past the gap quickly, not to understand it.
A pressured apology turns into a demand: "I'm sorry, can we just move on?" or "I said sorry, what else do you want?" If you hesitate, he gets irritated. That's a sign the apology was mostly for his benefit.
Check your case
An apology is one message. Whether anything will be different depends on the pattern. The test below asks 14 questions about what happens between you. It runs in your browser, and your answers never leave your device.

What to say back
If you want to give it a chance: "Thank you for saying that, I appreciate it. I'm open to talking, but I'd need things to be different, especially around disappearing."
If you want to test it first: "Thanks for apologizing. I'd like to understand what happened. Want to talk on the phone this week?" A call or a coffee asks a little more of him than a text does. Someone who meant it will say yes.
If you want to close the door: "I appreciate the apology. I've moved on, but I wish you well." You can accept an apology without accepting him back.
What to watch afterward
The apology matters less than the next three weeks. Does he start conversations? Does he suggest a real plan? Does he stay reachable? If the answer to all three is no, the apology was the whole return. For more on those weeks, see he ghosted me and came back like nothing happened. If he came back without any apology, the wording is different: see how to respond to a guy who ghosted you and came back.
Quick answers
Should I give him a second chance after he ghosted me? If you want to, attach a condition you can check, like "tell me when you need space instead of vanishing." A second chance with no condition is just the first chance again.
He ghosted me and now wants to talk. Should I agree? A conversation is a much smaller step than getting back together. You can hear him out and still decide nothing that day.
What if his apology makes me angrier? That's common. An apology can make the hurt feel real again. You don't have to reply right away, and you don't have to pretend it's all fine when you do.
If his return has stirred up more than you expected, it's okay to talk to someone about it. Here is where to get help.
