She was leaving for a long time: the decision came before the words

The breakup was calm, or it just faded out, and the talks about it went on for more than one evening. She had the words ready because she’d been rehearsing them long before that day. By the time she said it out loud, the decision was mostly made.

Decisions like this hold firmer, and persuasion won’t move them: she’s heard promises before, maybe more than once. The only thing that moves things here is visible change, and a month isn’t enough for that, so the realistic horizon is closer to three months, with most of the work happening on your side rather than between you. The uncomfortable part: if she was leaving for a long time and you only noticed at the very end, the signs were probably there, and you weren’t reading them.
