On hold: one sentence has put everything on pause

On paper, you’re on pause: he said he isn’t ready, and you’re both acting like it’s temporary. In practice, everything else works like a relationship, except the label and your right to ask about it. He shows up, he’s around, he stays, and yet where you stand is frozen by one sentence he said once and now uses to answer every question you ask.

The weak spot is that the wait has no end date. Waiting without a date doesn’t end on its own. It ends when one of you gets tired, and it’s usually not the person it suits. There’s one way to move it: shift the conversation from his readiness to concrete things that either happen or don’t.
