My Girlfriend Doesn't Want to Talk About the Future: What This Marker Shows
Your girlfriend doesn't want to talk about the future. Last year she was sending you apartment listings. Now "let's see" is the answer to everything past next weekend.
What it looks like
You mention your friend's wedding in June. "That's so far away, let's not plan yet." You bring up a trip for her birthday. "Maybe, we'll see."
A year ago she'd already have a spreadsheet. Now anything more than a few weeks out gets a shrug, a change of subject, or a joke.
You haven't said anything. But you've noticed that "we" has turned into "I" when she talks about next year.
Why this one matters
How far ahead two people plan together says a lot about where they are. Plans usually shrink in steps: from years to seasons, from seasons to months, from months to the next weekend. Each step is small enough to miss. Taken together, the horizon tells you more than her mood on any given day.
Three explanations
1. She's always lived in the present
Some people don't plan far ahead with anyone. If she never did, and nothing else has changed, this isn't a new signal.
How to check. Think back to your first year. Did she talk about the future then? If not, this is her baseline.
2. The future became a pressure point
If you've pushed on moving in, engagement or kids, and she's dodged, the topic itself may now feel like a test she can fail. Avoiding it keeps the peace.
How to check. Does she dodge only the big topics, or also small ones like a concert in two months? If small plans still work, this explanation fits.
3. She's not sure the future includes you
She may be weighing the relationship and doesn't want to promise what she can't keep. Vague answers are more honest to her than fake plans.
How to check. Look at other markers: touch, who starts conversations, whether she asks about your day. If they've faded too, read my girlfriend is pulling away: what to do.
What to do
Stop
- Stop pushing big-ticket plans right now. Pressing on rings or leases makes the dodge stronger.
- Stop treating "we'll see" as a yes. It isn't one, and pretending costs you months.
- Stop hinting. Leaving listings open on the laptop reads as pressure.
This week
Suggest one small plan two to four weeks out. A show, a dinner, a day trip. Watch the reaction, not just the answer.
Within 14 days
If small plans get dodged too, ask directly and calmly: "I've noticed we've stopped making plans past the next couple of weeks. I'm not asking for a big commitment. I'd like to know whether you still picture us down the road."
Her answer may be hard to hear. It's still better than another six months of "let's see." If she asked for space already, read my girlfriend said she needs space.

FAQ
My girlfriend doesn't talk about our future. Should I be worried? Only if it's new, or if it comes with other changes like less touch and fewer conversations. On its own, it may be her style.
My girlfriend doesn't like talking about the future. How do I bring it up? Start small and concrete rather than big and abstract. A plan for next month is easier to discuss than "where is this going."
What if she says she doesn't know if she sees a future with me? Take it seriously and don't argue. Ask what would need to change, and whether she wants to try. Her answer to that second question tells you most of what you need.
