My girlfriend uses ChatGPT to talk to me: when it's help with words and when it's a stand-in

Her apology arrived as four tidy paragraphs, opening with "I want to acknowledge how my words affected you." She usually texts in lowercase with no punctuation.

It sounds like her, only smoother

The content is fine. Maybe better than fine. But it doesn't sound like the person who texts you "omw" and a string of emojis. The phrasing is careful and balanced, and it seems to have been written by someone with a lot of patience.

The odd feeling is fair. You wanted to hear from her, and you're not sure you did. Here are the three usual reasons, and they mean very different things.

She's afraid of getting it wrong. Hard conversations make some people freeze. The chatbot helps her say what she means without it coming out harsher than intended. The feelings are hers. The grammar is borrowed.

She wants a buffer. Writing through an app keeps the rawness at arm's length. It's easier to send a polished paragraph than to sit with how upset she is.

She's handing off the effort. The message is a stand-in for thinking it through herself. The tell here is that the text is generic enough to send to anyone, and when you reply, her follow-up doesn't match its tone.

Where your lines are

Whether this bothers you depends on a rule you've probably never discussed: is it okay to get help with words in a relationship? The test below has 10 questions about lines like that one. You can take it together and compare, or answer for yourself and guess her answers. It runs in your browser, and your answers aren't sent anywhere.

What to say

Ask without accusing. "That message was really clear. It also didn't quite sound like you. Did you get help writing it? I don't mind. I just want the messy version too."

Respond to the content first. If the apology says the right things, accept the apology. Whether a chatbot helped is a separate conversation.

Ask for a voice note or a real conversation for the big stuff. "For the important things, I'd rather hear it from you directly, even if it comes out clumsy."

One uncomfortable note: plenty of people who mind this have used ChatGPT to write a hard text themselves. If you have, say so. It turns an accusation into a shared rule.

When it's more than a writing habit

If she only talks about feelings through polished text and never in person. If every serious conversation happens in writing. If you feel like you're dating a very polite chatbot and she won't discuss it. That pattern is about avoidance, not software, and talking with a professional can help. Here's where to get help.

FAQ

How can I tell if a text was written with ChatGPT? There's no reliable way to know for sure, and detector tools make mistakes. A sudden change in her usual style is the best clue, and asking is better than guessing.

Is it a problem if she also brings ChatGPT into our fights? That's a different pattern. See my girlfriend uses ChatGPT every time we have an argument. If she's also talking the relationship through with it, read my GF is using ChatGPT as a therapist instead of talking to me.
